- Words from the other side of outdoor seasonal work-

The Check In

The Super Bowl halftime show? I’ll say this and leave the rest to the experts: I will always stand for a Gemini and their revenge art.

Amid Kendrick’s “Not Like Us” run, petty has been trending in the zeitgeist. Yet on consideration, nothing Kendrick has done with Not Like Us is particularly petty or trivial, is it? It’s been a masterful and complex multistep take down, speaking against not only his rival but to mainstream systems and the status quo.

Kendrick has always sublimated his defense and pain into art. In this instance, he could’ve simply blasted Drake on social media, picked up a headline or two. Petty. But instead, he processed the emotion through him and created something with his team that spoke to millions of other’s unique situations as well.

Beyonce did the same in the face of the country music establishment with Cowboy Carter (she’s on my mind - I’m 31,078th in line in the queue for tour tickets as I write).

What does this have to do with your work life? In your career, whether as an outdoor seasonal or as a 9-5er, people will disappoint you. You’ll inevitably be treated unfairly once or twice. You might be pushed out of a job by a toxic supervisor, you’ll lose funding, you won’t get the job, you might bare the brunt of someone else’s mistake.

An example: Early in my transition from outdoor seasonal to 9-5 work, I worked with a tough supervisor. While I won’t go into details, the relationship really shook my confidence. Now (and a lot of therapy bills later), however, the experience motivates my work. How do I ensure that young people entering the job market know their worth? How do I set them up for successful relationships within their first 9-5s? Sneak Peak: Unseasoned Coaching available now!

What do we do with our pain? The best art teaches us how to live our lives better. What would Kendrick do? What would Beyonce do? No - it is not random our best lessons in this come from artists with marginalized identities. But that’s a different post. These two artists teach me how a long game, strategic response is almost always more satisfying than a quick hit.

In 2025, I want to see you all calling your Serenas to the stage. I want to see you grinning in the face of any disappointment that comes your way. We have to resist and complain, yes. We also have to build something beautiful in it’s wake.

Did you watch the Super Bowl Halftime Show? Did you get your Cowboy Carter tickets (update: I DID NOT, ugh)!

This week on Instagram, we answered a community question about negotiating a salary in a passion-focused industry. What advice would you give?

@green.to.gold replied: Are there % periodic increases stated and clear timelines of when they occur? Where is their offer within the salary range listed? What % increase is the offer from recent or current job? These are my baseline non emotional questions in this scenario. Do everything in your power to exorcise from your body the concern about “taking $$ away from programs or projects” — they are hiring YOU so those programs kick ass and likely their revenue/funding increases and their programs grow and thrive. Do not postpone that extra salary $ for later that you could earn now because if you’re a great employee who cares about your work and the mission, they are the ones who won the lottery by hiring you. Ask for the $$ you want. Do not delay.🙌

How I’d Apply

An Unseasoned community member recently recommended folks with outdoor seasonal backgrounds explore the finance and banking world. With 5+ years of outdoor industry experience herself, she highlighted how public-facing roles such as “Community Business Banker” and “Teller” can be a good entry-level option for those with honed customer service skills. For example:
